Spring and fall yard cleanups in Winnipeg

The two big resets of the year, done properly. Winter grit, matted grass and snow mould cleared in spring; leaves, dead growth and a final cut handled in fall.

Raked leaf piles on a lawn beside a Winnipeg bungalow in autumn

The yard takes a beating in a Winnipeg winter and another one in a Winnipeg fall. A cleanup gets it back to a clean starting point in one visit, instead of a month of weekends. Everything we remove gets bagged and hauled away.

Spring: raking out matted, snow mould patches, power raking to lift the thatch, clearing the sand and gravel the plows threw onto the lawn, cutting back last year's growth in the beds, and a first cut once the grass is ready.

Fall: leaves raked and removed, beds cut back and tidied, a final short cut so the lawn goes into winter clean, and eavestroughs cleared while we are there if you want it done in the same visit.

Why the cleanup matters more here than most places

Winnipeg lawns spend five months under snow. When it finally goes, what is left is flattened grass, grey circles of snow mould and a strip of sand along the street from a winter of plowing. Leave it and the lawn starts the year smothered. Power raking in spring lifts all of that out and lets air and water back to the roots, which is why the lawns that get a proper spring cleanup are the ones that look thick by June.

In fall, the elms, ash and maples on most city streets drop more leaves than one household can reasonably deal with. A thick leaf layer left over winter is next spring's snow mould. Getting it off before the snow is the single cheapest thing you can do for the lawn.

Spring and fall yard cleanups: questions we get asked

When should a spring cleanup happen?
Once the lawn has dried out enough to walk on without leaving footprints, usually late April into May. We watch the weather and book around it, because power raking a wet lawn does more harm than good.
When should a fall cleanup happen?
After most of the leaves are down but before the snow stays, typically late October into early November. If your trees drop late, we can do a second pass.
Do you take everything away?
Yes. Leaves, thatch, cuttings and bed debris all leave with us. You are not left with a row of bags at the curb.
Can you do both cleanups and the cutting in between?
Yes, and it is the simplest way to run a yard: spring cleanup, weekly cutting through the season, fall cleanup, then snow. One crew all year.
