Mature elm trees lining a residential street in Winnipeg

Trees and hedges are the best thing about most Winnipeg yards, right up until they are scraping the roof, blocking the driveway sight line or dropping dead limbs onto the lawn. We trim and prune residential trees, hedges and shrubs: raising low canopies, clearing branches off roofs, eaves and wires, thinning overgrown shrubs, and shaping hedges so they stay dense instead of leggy.

Cuttings are chipped or hauled away, and we tidy the lawn underneath. For large removals or work near power lines we will tell you straight if it is a job for a certified arborist rather than pretend otherwise.

Trimming and pruning

  • Low branches lifted over walks, driveways and lawns
  • Branches cleared off roofs, eaves and siding
  • Deadwood and broken limbs removed
  • Overgrown shrubs thinned and reshaped

Hedges

  • Cedar, lilac, caragana and privacy hedges shaped
  • Height taken down in stages so the hedge stays green
  • Sides squared and tops levelled
  • All cuttings removed

Pruning around Winnipeg's trees and Winnipeg's rules

This city has one of the largest urban elm canopies anywhere, and protecting it means elms are not pruned between April 1 and July 31 under Manitoba's elm pruning ban, so we schedule elm work outside that window. Most other trees are best pruned when dormant, in late winter or early spring, and hedges take their main shaping in early summer with a light tidy in late summer.

Older neighbourhoods like River Heights, Wolseley and St. Boniface have big mature trees that have not been touched in years. Newer areas have young trees that need a small amount of shaping now to avoid a big problem later. Either way we look at the tree first and tell you what it actually needs.

Tree trimming and hedge pruning: questions we get asked

Can you prune my elm tree?
Yes, outside the provincial ban period of April 1 to July 31. We book elm work for the dormant months and diseased elm wood is disposed of properly.
Do you remove trees?
Small trees and shrubs, yes. Large removals, anything near power lines, or climbing work is arborist territory, and we will say so rather than take on something that is not safe.
Do you take the branches away?
Yes. Everything is chipped or hauled off and the area underneath is raked clean.
My hedge is way too tall. Can it be cut right down?
Usually, but in stages. Taking too much off a cedar hedge at once leaves brown patches that never fill in. We bring it down over a season or two so it stays green.
